Clerkships

Clerkships are short-term legal work placements, usually for penultimate or final-year law students. They offer a practical insight into legal practice and are a key pathway to graduate employment, especially with top-tier and national firms. Unlike other states, we don’t follow a formal clerkship framework. That means there are no set dates, lengths or payment requirements. Each firm runs their program differently, and it’s up to you to do the research.

Why do a clerkship?

Clerkships allow you to:

  • Explore different practice areas through structured rotations

  • Build your professional network

  • Strengthen your CV and gain relevant experience

  • Get your foot in the door as many firms recruit graduates from their former clerks

They’re particularly important for those looking to work interstate, where clerkship experience is often expected by major firms.

How to get started

Start early. Research firms that align with your interests, values and career goals. Focus on quality over quantity, a thoughtful, targeted application will stand out more than a generic one.

Prepare:

  • A tailored cover letter for each firm

  • A clear, professional resume with referees

  • Your academic transcript (often requested)

  • A strong understanding of the firm’s culture and practice areas

Interview tips

Be professional, do your research, and prepare thoughtful questions. First impressions matter, dress well, be confident, and show genuine interest.

Key dates
