About Mooting & Competitions

Competitions give students the chance to build practical legal skills in a dynamic and supportive environment. Whether you’re advocating in a moot, interviewing a client, negotiating a dispute, or delivering a witness examination, each competition helps develop essential skills in advocacy, legal reasoning, communication and teamwork.

Throughout the year, TULS runs a wide range of internal and external competitions, including mooting, witness examination, client interviews and negotiations. We also host workshops and training sessions to help you gain confidence and improve your skills, no prior experience is needed.

For more information, keep an eye on our Instagram and Facebook pages, check out the Competitions section of our website, or contact the Competitions Directors at competitions@tuls.com.au.

Negotiations

Negotiations is a core skill in legal practice and a fast-paced, strategic competition that challenges your communication and problem-solving abilities. Working in teams of two, competitors represent opposing parties in a fictional dispute. The goal is to negotiate an agreement that meets your client’s objectives within the scope of their instructions. TULS runs internal Negotiation competitions and supports participation in intervarsity and national events. We also compete in the annual TULS x SULS Negotiation Competition, held in collaboration with the Sydney University Law Society.

Client Interviewing

Client Interviewing replicates a first meeting with a potential client. In teams of two, competitors take on the role of legal practitioners, identifying relevant facts, spotting legal issues and providing preliminary advice, all while building rapport and maintaining professional conduct. This competition is ideal for developing communication and interpersonal skills, and it introduces you to ethical considerations such as confidentiality, conflict of interest and legal privilege. TULS runs internal Client Interviewing competitions and supports entries into intervarsity events. TULS also provides resources to help you prepare and perform confidently. In 2025, we launched the TULS x MULSS Client Interviewing Competition, in collaboration with the Melbourne University Law Students’ Society, offering students a new intervarsity opportunity to build their skills.

Witness Examination

Witness Examination simulates a criminal trial where two competitors, one for the prosecution and one for the defence, present different versions of an event using witness testimony to support their case. It’s an exciting chance to practise courtroom advocacy, develop your critical listening skills, and build persuasive arguments on your feet. It also provides useful insight into the application of evidence law, whether you’ve studied it or not. TULS runs internal Witness Examination competitions and encourages participation in intervarsity events. We offer guides and support for those looking to get involved.
