Competitions Report

What a busy couple of weeks we have had already on the Competitions calendar! The past three weeks have been full of seminars and competition try-outs to select the ALSA team to go to Adelaide in July. Seminars were held by various academic and practitioners such as Simon Nicholson from the DPP, Adrian Hall a Barrister from Launceston and staff member Michael Stokes. To these people, the competitions would not be possible without you. I know the students have learnt a lot from you and appreciate all the time you have given. The competitions were held over the past two weeks with about 50 students competing across the board in Negotiations, Witness Examination, Client Interview, IHL Moot, ALSA Moot and the Paper Presentation.  I will also take this opportunity to thank the judges; Simon Nicholson, Kate Warner, His Excellency- Honourable Peter Underwood, Michael Stokes, Adrian Hall, John Blackwood, Anja Hilkemeijer, Jonas Lipsius and Jane Neilson. I believe we have a great team for ALSA in 2010 and they are:

The Tasmanian Legal Practice Course Witness Examination: Pip Monk

The Law Society of Tasmania Negotiations Team: Aaron Cullen and Bunewat Keo

The Freehills Client Interview Team: Aneita Browning and Mark Roberts

The Mallesons Stephens Jaques ALSA Moot Team: Kate Whelan, Marco Bolonja and Courtney Lockett.

The Butler Mcintyre &Butler IHL Moot Team: Daphne Tan and Emma Davis

Paper Presentation: Meg Good

ALSA 2010 is co-hosted by the University of Adelaide, Flinders University and the University of South Australia, and will see over 500 law students converge to attend cocktail party and gala events, most prestigious competitions and educational forums from the 12th-18th of July. If any students wish to go to ALSA, you do not need to be a competitor, there are general delegate positions available. This is at your own cost, but if you are interested contact me.

Once again, thank you for all those who have assisted me with the competitions over the last couple of weeks, I really appreciate it. Also to the volunteers, It would not have been possible without you.

Please wish those successful students good luck at ALSA, and await their results in July.

TULS 2010 President’s welcome

Welcome to 2010!

The first year of a new decade, but with all the wisdom that the noughties gave us… it should be a good one.

TULS has plenty planned for all students in 2010.  We’ve kicked the year off with a bang, recruiting in excess of 500 members at clubs and societies day.  There’s still memberships available, so if you’re still on the outer, get in touch with a TULS committee member.  Memberships (post-societies’ day) are only $5!

The recent barrel was truly rock ‘n’ roll, with an excellent Guitar Hero competition… Angus Young, eat your heart out, baby.

We’ve also been focused on getting YOU a job.  The Law Forum and Careers Fair were very well attended.  Prospective employers were impressed.

Also, a ‘judicious’ (actually, HUGE) welcome to all of the Introduction to Law students.  We met some of you on Intro camp, and we have to say… we like your style!  A great way for Intro students to meet friends is to come along to TULS events and meet your fellow partners in crime (I mean… justice…).

In the not too distance future, TULS is holding more barrels and soirees, sporting matches (netball, cricket, soccer, football), COMPETITIONS (sign up now) and the TULS mentoring program (for intro and second year students).  Most importantly, keep an eye out for the cocktail party.  Tickets will sell out fast!

Hope to see you join in!
