Attention all 1st and 2nd year law students! COMPETITIONS ARE HERE!

Your time to shine is finally here! I am looking for all those debaters, actors, arguers and public speakers or those who want to learn these skills. Competitions give students in 4th and 5th year a chance to try-out for the ALSA conference and represent Tasmania. In order to get you all ready for these final years, I will be holding competitions for 1st and 2nd years directly after the mid-semester break. Competitions range from Mooting to client interviewing, witness examination, negotiations and paper presentation and International Humanitarian Moot (the last two will not be held for 1st and 2nd years).

Download the word document below for more information and workshop info.

President’s update – Semester two

Hi all,

Welcome back to semester two, 2010.  I hope that you all enjoyed the winter break.  We have a number of top events planned for semester two, so I hope, given winter hibernation, you have plenty of energy to get involved.

The TULS ‘Christmas in July’ barrel was a smashing success.  Our newly acquired spit roast turned out some fabulous ‘reindeer rolls’ which would have made for a very jolly Santa (OK, I’ll avoid jokes about ‘ho, ho, hoing’ too…).  The beer was cold, the fires were warm and we also have some NEW STUBBIE HOLDERS to warm your hands.  If you’d like to get your mits on some, they’re $4 – selling at a TULS event near you!

If you’re having world cup fever withdrawals, Soccer and Football tournaments are coming up.  The final competition is yet to be finalised, but we’re looking forward to a mighty match, hopefully involving Med, Engi and Business.

UTAS also had a very successful (and fun) time at the 2010 ALSA Conference.  Pip Monk got through to the semi-finals for Witness Examination.  Marko Bolonja won best speaker in a preliminary round moot.  Our delegation was one of the biggest yet – I would encourage you all to get involved in 2011, when the Conference is held in New South Wales.

Also, look out for your year group event… coming soon.  A great way to accumulate new law friends!  The fifth year lunch is booked in at the Bay Hotel, Sandy Bay… special thanks to our sponsor, the Law Society of Tasmania.

We also hope to get some social justice events on the agenda this semester.  If you have any suggestions about forums or events you’d like to see – we’re open to suggestions!

We’ll have more updates as the semester progresses.  ’Til then, study hard!

Winter Warmer

It’s the end of the semester, one which has come and gone way too fast for many to cope with. As well as an end, the start of winter is here. Some say that this is the time to get serious about study; they may be right but there is one more thing to do: celebrate the end of uni all together for some and postpone those inevitable exams with lubrication for others.

The Tasmania University Law Society (TULS) for 2010 is glad to celebrate the end of Semester one in style with our Winter Warmer Barrel. You know and love them and TULS knows how to do them. So get along and warm up for the start of winter and celebrate in style.

WHERE: Law School Cafe
WHEN: Friday 28th May, 3pm – 6pm
WHAT: Beer, Wine, Redbull Vodka & Vodka Mixers + BBQ

**** There will also be some great Mulled Wine available ****

Then as always it is off to the Metz
